Sam Maloof: Woodworker
Narrated by Maloof himself, this insightful
film depicts the craft and lifestyle of the master furniture maker who
was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship in July, 1985. He articulately describes
what is involved in designing and making beautiful wooden furniture, one
piece at a time. His devotion to his work and the profound satisfaction
that he gains from it are eloquently expressed. For Maloof, hand craftsmanship
is more than a livelihood, it is a philosophy. Unattracted by the frantic
materialism raging in much of our culture, Maloof, prefers a quieter,
deeper connection to his work, his materials, and the people who own his
furniture.
