Acting Our Age
Acting Our Age dispels myths
and challenges stereotypes of older women through the struggles and triumphs
of six women - aged sixty-five to seventy-five. The women speak with candor
and tackle subjects once considered "taboo." As these women
speak openly about changes in their looks, relationships, sexuality, money,
and death, their straightforward responses help reconstruct views about
aging. The first section of the film examines the connections between
changing looks and sense of self. While exploring changes in the relationships
of older women, loneliness and isolation are discussed as well as the
possibility of rich, new experiences. The third theme of this film examines
the struggle for everyday survival. Housing, economic, and health issues
are explored. Finally, the active roles these women play in their communities
are examined. This film interweaves the insights of the six women with
images of everyday life: eating alone, moving, stretching to ward off
the pain of arthritis, and special times with family members.
