Best Man: 'Best Boy' and All of Us
Twenty Years Later
Best Man examines the life
of seventy-year-old Philly Wohl, twenty years after Philly's journey toward
independence from his family. First documented in the Oscar-winning film,
Best Boy, the sequel Best Man examines Philly's life as
it is today. He is still living in the same facility, which is a self-supporting
group setting in Queens, New York. This film looks at his relationships
with his surrogate family in the group home. Philly is portrayed as a
content, kind-hearted man whose horizons have widened over time. His devoted
and colorful sister, Frances, acts as Philly's primary non-institutional
caregiver. Viewers are invited into the Wohl household to share the simple
pleasures of Philly's visits such as preparing a favorite sandwich or
chatting about the events of the past week. We watch Philly as he prepares
for his Bar Mitzvah, signifying his symbolic transition from boy to man.
Best Man celebrates the importance of family, traditions, and the
warmth of shared kindness.
