The Chemo Paintings

The Chemo Paintings is a touching documentary about the artist Dorothy Bryan. From diagnosis through recovery, this film follows Dorothy's experience with ovarian cancer and subsequent treatments. In a stylistic presentation, the program shows how Dorothy uses art as therapy, creating a visual diary of her battle against cancer. The ten-piece painted series that evolved from her sickness offers a unique perspective into some of the issues cancer patients may face. Rather than focusing on medical details, the program emphasizes Dorothy's emotional experience. During interview segments, Dorothy and her family discuss how they confront the physical reality of the cancer treatment, including potential losses in lifestyle, privacy, personality, and control. They also talk openly about mortality issues. Ultimately recovering, Dorothy was profoundly affected by this illness, as reflected through a transformation in her art style. Today, Dorothy uses her chemo paintings to help others facing this illness.
