The Cost of Caring

The Cost of Caring is both a documentary and a public service program addressing one of the hardest financial burdens faced by elderly Americans and their families, which is the need for expensive long-term nursing home care not insured by Medicare or private policy. The program explains what Medicare does and does not cover and informs viewers of their rights under Medi-Cal (Medicaid). Profiling three married couples and their families in southern California who have faced the burdens of long-term care, allows viewers to hear of the frustrations and obstacles they have encountered. Although some health care details are specific to California, the issues examined are universally relevant. The policies affecting spouses of the people needing long-term care are also examined. As we hear these first-hand accounts, viewers gain a new perspective on the struggle to age with dignity.
