Dorothy Molters: Living in the Boundary
Waters
Dorothy Molter: Living in the
Boundary Waters is the story of a contemporary folk hero whose rustic
lifestyle and complete self-reliance bring her to national attention.
Over fifty years ago, Molter parted with tradition and decided to leave
city life completely behind her. She spent the next fifty-six years living
alone in a rugged wilderness region of northern Minnesota. Dorothy narrates
her own story, as this film follows her over a four-year period, and shares
her unique perspectives and touching remembrances. Her activities, revolving
in step with the changing of the seasons, show Dorothy cultivating wild
flowers in the spring, gathering ice blocks in the winter, and preparing
root beer for her thousands of yearly visitors. This contemplative film
embodies a woman at peace with herself, her environment and her life's
choices. It preserves a legacy of independence and self-reliance, and
presents a positive and inspiring role model.
