Elder Abuse and Neglect
in the Family
Elder Abuse and Neglect in the
Family is a three-tape series that examines definitions of neglect,
financial, physical and emotional abuse as well as explains the unique
challenges of each situation. By exploring the cycle of abuse theory and
the factors that motivate a youth-orientated society, the causes and manifestations
of abuse are examined through conversations with victims, medical staff,
and elder abuse professionals. This series also delves into the excruciatingly
painful choices the abused elderly must face once they accept that a beloved
child, grandchild, or spouse is causing harm to them. In addition, this
program provides an opportunity to examine the fragile balance caseworkers
experience as they strive to provide individuals with healthy options
and also respect the sometimes unhealthy situations in which abused elderly
choose to remain. Perceived as a family matter, it is only recently that
awareness surrounding the tragedy of elder abuse has been aroused and
this series provides an overview of these problems.
