Final Choices

Final Choices is a segment of Lifeguides, a science/art/public policy documentary series of the Los Angeles PBS station KCET. This particular program focuses on the staff, patients, and families at a California medical center. Final Choices explores the profound moral and legal dilemmas that modern life-saving technology has created for many thousands of people. First-hand accounts by doctors, nurses, a hospital ethics committee, family members, as well as the dying patients themselves, allow viewers to hear the perspective of those faced with this supreme moral question: "who has the right to decide who lives or dies, especially when the patient is comatose?" Highlighted are recent legal actions, and California's "durable power of attorney," which allow individuals to decide, in advance, if they want to prolong their lives with technology.
