The Granny Myth
This uplifting documentary shatters
the stereotype of The Granny Myth as it presents positive and realistic
views of older women. Peg Phillips, who played the feisty Ruth
Ann on the Emmy Award-winning television series "Northern Exposure,"
introduces viewers to older women who are the antithesis of society's
stereotypical "old woman." This group includes environmental
and social activists averaging seventy years old, a fifty-year-old Korean-American
Presbyterian minister who works with homeless women, and a woman who crusades
against ageism on her radio show. This film offers valuable advice on
relevant topics that include health care, job discrimination, and retirement,
suggesting that older women facing ageism should train for new jobs instead
of ending their careers. Also featured are older women who are taking
an active role in the lives of their grandchildren and other young people
by promoting stability and traditional values.
