Halmani

Halmani explores the identity crisis experienced by a ten-year-old Amerasian girl as she meets her Korean grandmother, "Halmani," for the first time. Her grandmother comes to live with the young girl and her family in a small southern California town. At first, Kathy is excited to meet the Grandmother she has never seen before, but her feelings quickly change to embarrassment when her classmates laugh at "Halmani's" unfamiliar clothing and inability to speak English. Then, the different foods and ancient practices "Halmani" introduces to the household are very confusing to Kathy. She eventually learns of the unresolved tensions that developed years ago between her parents' families based on their cultural differences. However, as Kathy is compelled to confront her mixed cultural heritage, she learns to respect the traditions of her grandmother. Ironically, it is "Halmani" who is the most understanding of Kathy's feelings. (Appropriate for younger viewers)
