Minnie Black's Gourd Band

This film provides a light-hearted portrait of a spirited eighty-nine
year-old woman who sculpts fanciful creations and musical instruments from homegrown gourds. A tour of Minnie's home and grounds offers insight into the many types and sizes of gourds that actually exist, and what it takes to successfully cultivate a bumper crop. Minnie has the eye of an artist and an outrageous sense of humor when she creates her fun and wildly colorful creatures and instruments. Some of her pieces evolve from gourds that are larger than a small adult. This video profiles the senior citizen gourd band she founded as they play hand clapping, sing-along gospel tunes or whirl around wildly doing a version of a polka. As a content, absorbed, outspoken woman, Minnie represents a growing population of inspirational, productive older adults.
