Mother's Keeper
Mother's Keeper documents
the feelings of Linda Flores and portrays the changing nature of her relationship
with her mother Ethel, who is developing Alzheimer's disease. Linda, unable
to care for her mother, has tried to surround her with support services
in her own home. Throughout her mother's apartment, Linda has posted signs
warning her mother of the dangers associated with activities she should
no longer attempt without help. Linda speaks of her memories of the strong
mother figure from her childhood and how she misses the emotional support
and conversation she no longer receives. More often, Linda finds herself
acting as the mother as she tucks Ethel into bed for the night. This was
a segment in an hour-long PBS program looking at the role of mothers in
American society. The purpose of the piece is to give viewers a sense
of the increasing debilitation of one woman, while emphasizing her strength
and dignity.
