Nobody's BusinessDirector Alan Berliner takes on his reclusive father as the reluctant subject of this family documentary. Through interviews with his father, mother, sister, and other family members, Berliner examines his father's personality, family dynamics, and history. After extensive research, Berliner unearths photographs and records that establish the birthplaces of his great-grandparents in Poland and Russia during the 1870's. Berliner's father adamantly states that he feels no connection with these relatives. However, when the subject of his years in the army arises, Berliner's father becomes animated and refers to that period of time as "the best of his life." The filmmaker asks probing questions to help him understand his father's sense of "family" and how that affected their personal relationship. The documentary intersperses humorous moments with moving and revealing insights.DATE: 1996 TOPICS:
