Not a Jealous BoneNot a Jealous Bone is an operetta about an eighty-twoyear-old woman's search for her youth in the form of a magic bone that she believes will allow her to live forever. Immediately wanting to share this knowledge with her dying mother, Sophie is prevented from going to her by a conniving, younger woman. Invoking a parable of God breathing life into dry bones, videomaker Cecelia Condit develops an experimental narrative about an older woman's loss of her mother and coming to terms with her own life and death. Reality is intermingled throughout this stylistic fairytale. Flashes of Sophie's frail body, footage of elderly in retirement homes, and openly stated hesitations about becoming older, are sung in a childish manner. The strength of Not a Jealous Bone is its celebration of the aging population. It proclaims fears openly and embraces aging and the elderly. DATE: 1987 TOPICS:
