Queen of Falcon
At age eighty-eight, Mable Ross
of Falcon, Mississippi is just hitting her stride. In poverty-stricken
Delta Village, she is a modern-day folk hero. At age thirty-seven, Mable
abandoned her work in the cotton fields to teach school. As a natural-born
educator, Mable was able to impart on to her students both her love of
learning and respect for good grades. By taking night classes, Mable graduated
from college with a degree in psychology. She was sixty-two years old
at the time. After she retired from teaching, Mable continued to influence
her community, as a postmistress and newspaper columnist. From cotton
fields to the classroom, from post-mistress to newspaper columnist, one
theme has played true throughout her life, service to others. For the
people of Falcon, she is the essence of kindness and compassion and a
living example of human potential.
