A Safer Place

A Safer Place is a documentary about elder abuse, which was sponsored by the Illinois Department on Aging's public service campaign devoted exclusively to elder abuse. The main character in the film is Nancy Hansen, a woman who openly admits to having abused her aged mother. Nancy speaks of the feelings of helplessness, frustration, and rage that first led to emotional abuse and progressed to physical mistreatment. She urges any caregiver that is experiencing these feelings to heed early warning signs and get help from neighbors, friends, other family members, and special agencies before abuse occurs. The film also features two elderly victims of abuse who have made the choice to find better living situations for themselves. Also highlighted in this moving documentary is the emotional trauma elderly parents experience, when they admit that the children they love take advantage of them financially, emotionally, or physically.
