Turnabout

Turnabout celebrates the life and work of Harry Burnett and Forman Brown, the founders of the Yale Puppeteers. Burnett is a world famous puppeteer and Brown is a composer, lyricist, and writer. Both are in their nineties and share memories of their lives with humor and insight. While chronicling the success of their business endeavors, interwoven throughout the story line is their cohabitation during a period when few people could afford to be openly gay. Dan Bessie, the nephew of Harry Burnett, narrates this one-hour documentary which interweaves puppets, interviews, and satirical songs to tell the story of their Turnabout Theatre. Along with partners Roddy Brandon and Dorothy Neumann, Burnett and Brown turned this unique marionette and cabaret-style theatre into one of Hollywood's "must see" tourist attractions from 1941 to 1956. Elsa Lanchester is featured along with the internationally known folk singer Odetta, both of whom worked at Turnabout Theatre.
