The Work I've Done
The Work I've Done explores
the ambivalence and personal crises that often follow retirement, from
the deadening pain of one's hands, to the struggle to redefine one's life.
By examining the emotional and psychological meaning of retirement, this
film reflects on the meaning of work. Beginning with several men who have
already retired from the Budd Auto Plant, and one man who is working his
last days there, filmmaker Ken Fink encourages each man to tell his own
story. Enhancing their recollections are scenes of the men at work, as
well as at special events, such as an annual bus trip and a retirement
party. Several men speak openly about the sense of loss and boredom they
felt when their working days ended. However, retirement need not bring
this sense of emptiness. For one couple, retirement was the beginning
of a new life and love.
