Juliet of the Spirits
Cinematographer Gianni di Venanzo's masterful use of Technicolor transforms
Juliet of the Spirits, Fellini's first color feature, into a
kaleidoscope of
dreams, spirits, and memories. Felline's wife, Giulietta Masina, plays
a middle-aged woman who suspects her husband, Giogio (Mario Pisu), of
cheating after his neglect of her becomes habitual. Frightened by the
prospect of suffering a failed marriage, Juliet receives mixed advice
from friends, family, and the spirit world. After a private detective
confirms her worst suspicions, Juliet's world is transformed into a
surreal sea of memories from her childhood and symbolic fantasies, which
she soon discovers are useful tools for coming to terms with her dilemma.Ultimately,
Juliet realizes that emerging from the shadow of her husband is a discovery
of individuality, one which allows her to start her life again with
newfound liberation and freedom. This is a fully restored version of
one of Fellini's most dazzling dreams. Stars Caterina Boratto, Alba
Cancelliert, Valentina Cortese, Rosella De Depio, Sylva Koscina, Giulietta
Masina, Sandra Milo and Mario Pisu.
