The film stars Marlon Brando who dreams of being a prizefighter: I coulda been a contenda. Meanwhile he tends his pigeons and running errands at the docks for the corrupt boss of the dockers union. He witnesses a murder by two of the corrupt boss thugs, and later meets the dead man's sister and eventually feels responsible for the mans death. She introduces him to a priest who tries to convince him to give law officials information that could smash the dock racketeers. Also stars Karl Malden, Lee J. Cobb, Rod Steiger.
