My Uncle Joe

Filmmaker Bill Rogers introduces us to his uncle, Joe, who spent 28 years in institutions when Depression-era conditions forced Joe's parents to send him away. Diagnosed as mildly retarded, he endured the physical and mental hardships that were a fact of life during those years, but soon after his father's death and his mother was felled by a stroke, Joe took the needed steps to leave the institutional life and live on his own. In an intimate and often humorous interview, we hear Joe tell of his dark days when he refused to be discouraged and the new independent life he leads today.
