Leona's Sister Gerri

In the time before abortions were legal, many a young woman lost her life in a botched attempt to end her pregnancy. This video by Jane Gillooly tells of one such young woman from a large Ukranian-American farming family who died in 1964 at the age of 27. Her name was Gerri Santoro and her sister and daughters provide their memories and sometimes conflicting opinions on the laws that surrounded the death of their loved one. Particularly poignant are their sentiments on the use of a graphic police photo of Gerri Santoro's body on a motel room floor as an anonymous, but powerful icon for reproductive freedom.
