Not a Simple Story/
Out in Silence

Actually two separate stories that work as companion pieces, they present Asian Pacific Americans, gay and straight, male and female who have courageously gone public about being HIV positive in order to dispel the myth that Asian Americans do not get AIDS. "Not a Simple Story" takes place in Hawaii and introduces a widowed mother of a young child who is HIV positive herself and is the only Asian female AIDS activist. "Out in Silence" tells us about a young gay man who left his conservative family in Hawaii and struck out to become a singer. Upon learning he was HIV positive he was shocked to discover how little Asian Americans knew about the disease, and he now educates them through performances by his gay theatre group and lectures to students. Both videos are directed by Christine Choy.
