Art of Indonesia: Tales from the Shadow World - Currently Unavailable

Explores the ancient treasures of Indonesia and its "shadow world": the rituals, myths, and performances by which the harmony of the universe is maintained. Weaves together Old Javanese poetry, sculpture, landscapes, music, and performances by traditional artists and healers. Visits Borobudur, ruins of a massive Buddhist temple from the ninth century, and Prambana, an important Hindu temple. Filmed on location in Java and Bali. Produced in conjunction with the exhibition, "Sculpture of Indonesia" held at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., in 1990, which toured the United States in 1990-1991.

Curator's Comments: An exceptionally beautiful production, with a creative mix of sound and image to evoke a mystical atmosphere in retelling ancient myths. Especially good sequence: the stone reliefs that tell the story of Rama and the Monkey King.
