Francis Bacon - Currently Unavailable

Profiles British painter Francis Bacon (1909-1992), whose work features distorted human figures in empty rooms. Host Melvyn Bragg follows Bacon's daily activities from his cluttered studio, where he starts work at dawn, to a pub and gambling hall in Soho, London. Explores how his way of life affects his vision of the world. The artist discusses his fascination with gaping mouths, wounds, male flesh, and meat, as well as the influence of British photographer Eadweard Muybridge (1830-1904) on his attempts to capture the essence of movement. The South Bank Show series.

Curator's Comments: A rakish (and slightly tipsy) Bacon comments on his own work and that of other painters who have inspired him. His insights facilitate our understanding of paintings that may be difficult to appreciate on initial viewing.
