Botero: 4 Seasons - Currently Unavailable

Everyone has seen his work-the solid, voluptuous figures and distorted landscapes--but who really knows who he is? This film follows Fernando Botero (b. 1932) from Bogotá to New York, from Florence to Paris, throughout the seasons, to all the places that have influenced his life and creations. Born into a poor family in Medellín, Colombia, he studied bullfighting as a way to escape poverty but was more drawn to art. In Paris, he visits the Louvre which inspired him to paint his own versions of famous paintings. He also studied in Florence where sketching a mandolin led him to consider another way of depicting volume. But the fat forms he creates also occur in pre-Columbian works and throughout art history. When Botero first came to New York, he had no money and sold drawings for a pittance to survive. Then a curator at the Museum of Modern Art bought one of his paintings for the museum, which opened doors for him; he began to work seriously here as an artist. Back in his Colombia studio, he experiments with fresco technique.

Curator's Comments: The artist is allowed to tell his story, without commentary or narration by the filmmaker. Makes an interesting rags-to-riches scenario.
