Everyone has seen his work-the solid,
voluptuous figures and distorted landscapes--but who really knows who
he is? This film follows Fernando Botero (b. 1932) from Bogotá
to New York, from Florence to Paris, throughout the seasons, to all the
places that have influenced his life and creations. Born into a poor family
in Medellín, Colombia, he studied bullfighting as a way to escape
poverty but was more drawn to art. In Paris, he visits the Louvre which
inspired him to paint his own versions of famous paintings. He also studied
in Florence where sketching a mandolin led him to consider another way
of depicting volume. But the fat forms he creates also occur in pre-Columbian
works and throughout art history. When Botero first came to New York,
he had no money and sold drawings for a pittance to survive. Then a curator
at the Museum of Modern Art bought one of his paintings for the museum,
which opened doors for him; he began to work seriously here as an artist.
Back in his Colombia studio, he experiments with fresco technique. Curator's

artist is allowed to tell his story, without commentary or narration by
the filmmaker. Makes an interesting rags-to-riches scenario. DATE: 1992
