Gustave
Caillebotte or The Adventures of the Gaze - Currently
Unavailable
Looks at the life and work of French
painter Gustave Caillebotte (1848-1894), who was born into a wealthy Parisian
family. He was licensed to practice law but began to study art with Léon
Bonnat. Dubbed the "Urban Impressionist," Caillebotte created
dynamic cityscapes. His paintings are always about someone looking at
something. In his masterpiece, Paris Street, Rainy Day, a fashionable
couple gaze outside the picture frame as people from all walks of life
hurry along the boulevard. Caillebotte painted some 450 works in his lifetime,
but he is perhaps best remembered as a generous art patron. His superb
collection of paintings by Impressionist masters was left to the state,
and is now in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. His brother, Martial,
was a composer and photographer; his music is heard in this film. Curator's
Comments: A
witty and enjoyable adventure in looking intensely at many paintings,
with an analysis of their themes and perspectives. (A second, less successful,
video, GUSTAVE CAILLEBOTTE IN THE COUNTRY, directed by Emmanuel Laurent,
looks at the artist's works painted during summers spent at the family
estate in Yerre, near Paris, and the influence of photography on his painting.) DATE: 1994
