Mobile: By Alexander Calder

The last major work of American sculptor Alexander "Sandy" Calder (1898-1976) was the commission to design the gigantic red and black mobile that graces the atrium of the East Building of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. This film documents how the artist, architect I.M. Pei (who designed the East Building), artist/engineer Paul Matisse, and museum officials faced the challenges of producing this monumental and technically complex piece, which was completed shortly after Calder's death. Calder's wife, Louisa, and J. Carter Brown, then director of the National Gallery, also appear in the film.

Curator's Comments: Concisely presents Calder's biographical information and traces the planning, construction, and installation of this light-hearted but technically challenging piece. Includes a delightful excerpt from Carlos Vilardebo's 1961film, CALDER'S CIRCUS, where the artist playfully manipulates his wire circus characters. Its brevity and focus on the work and the creative process make MOBILE an outstanding film for all audiences.
