Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) was initially
associated with the Impressionists, but his innovations in representing
the natural world laid the foundations for the art of the 20th century,
paving the way for Cubism and abstraction. In this video, artists (Howard
Hodgkin, R. B. Kitaj, Bridget Riley), curators, and historians analyze
the radical nature of his invention, tracing its origins in the art of
the 19th century and the work of the Old Masters, revealed all the more
clearly by a broad view of his lifetime preoccupations. Descendents of
the artist discuss his family history and temperament. Written and presented
by Matthew Collings.
