Marc Chagall - Currently Unavailable

DVD
An exploration of the life and work of Russian painter and printmaker Marc Chagall (1887-1985) through the eyes of a young painter whose curiosity is aroused when he discovers he is living in Chagall's former Paris studio, La Ruche. Born into a poor Russian Jewish family in Vitebsk, Chagall spent most of his long working life in France. Excerpts from Chagall's writings are read over views of his paintings. We also see examples of his stained glass work. The South Bank Show series.

Curator's Comments: A delightful production. The device of the young artist seeking to comprehend Chagall and his work is very effective; it allows the viewer to identify with the quest and to discover Chagall and his work along with the young student. Good use of Chagall's own texts. Nicely paced; music is appropriate. The film was made in 1986 and, regrettably, the original color has faded: Chagall's vibrant images appear washed out in this video version.
