The Landscapes of Frederic Edwin Church
An overview of the career of American
landscape painter Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900): Nicolai Cikovsky,
Jr., curator at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., discusses
the artist's most important works as he tours the property and interior
of Church's home, Olana, built in 1870 in Hudson, New York. Paintings
shown include New England Scenery (1851), Niagara (1857),
Heart of the Andes (1859), Icebergs (1861), Twilight
in the Wilderness (1860), Cotopaxi (1862), Parthenon
(1871), and Morning in the Tropics (1877).Curator's Comments: A loving appreciation of Church's work, showing the actual landscapes that inspired him. This is a good introduction to the period and to Church and his contemporaries, especially his mentor, Thomas Cole. Nice views of Olana, past and present.
