Chuck Close: Portrait in Progress - Currently UnavailableA journey through the New York art world with American painter Chuck Close (b. 1940). Since 1969, when Close's first large-scale black-and-white portraits were exhibited, his work has received acclaim. At first severe, confrontational, photographic in appearance, his portraits have evolved into mosaics of color that achieve a pointillist effect. Working from Polaroid photographs, Close's portraits capture the faces of many of the major artists of our time, including Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg. In 1988, Close suffered a collapse of the spinal artery that left him partially paralyzed. He has struggled to overcome this devastating blow and has devised ways to continue to paint. Comments by family and friends/subjects provide insight into the man and the artist, among them: his wife Leslie Close, composer Philip Glass, artists Mark Greenwold, Alex Katz, Dorothea Rockburne, Kiki Smith, and curator Robert Storr. Curator's Comments: Close is an articulate and knowledgeable observer of the current scene. His insights into the world of contemporary art and artists are enlightening and informative, as are his explanations of his own work.
