The Passing Show: Jacques-Louis David - Currently Unavailable

Docudrama based on the life of French painter Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825), artist of the French Revolution and dictator of the arts in his day, as seen through the eyes of one of his students, Etienne Delecluze, who wrote a memoir of the artist. Set in David's studio in Paris, the film dramatizes the turbulent history of the period and David's role in it. Combines footage from classic silent films about the Revolution, commentary on David's paintings, and dramatic set pieces.

Curator's Comments: Interesting mix of dramatic sequences and art-historical analysis. Treats David as history's fool, based on the point of view of Delecluze (an interpretation that some viewers find debatable). But it does make for an engaging history lesson and places David in the context of his time.
