The Unquiet Spirit: The Life and Art of Edgar Degas - Currently Unavailable

Writer David Thompson profiles French artist Edgar Degas (1834-1917): painter, printmaker, photographer, sculptor, and poet. Describes his evolution from history painter to, Thompson says, "the most penetrating portrayer of modern life of the nineteenth century." Explores the sources of Degas's art: classical traditions, photography, and Japanese prints. Shows many works rarely seen in exhibitions: his notebooks, wax sculptures, and monotypes. The Lively Arts series.

Curator's Comments: Thoughtful, intelligent, lucid, informative without being pedantic. Useful comparisons between live images and paintings. Opens and closes with footage of a nude woman bathing, replicating the qualities of light, color, and motion that Degas captured on canvas.
