The Restless Eye: Eugène Delacroix - Currently UnavailableDramatized biography of French painter Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863), based primarily on his journals and the insights into his artistic and psychological contradictions which they provide. Traces Delacroix's development from the time of his first Salon exhibit with Dante and Virgil Crossing the Styx (1822), placing him in the context of the political upheavals of the time. Also describes the reaction to his later and much scorned paintings, The Massacre at Chios (1824) and The Death of Sardinapalus (1824). Narrated by Colin Nears.Curator's Comments: Makes good use of the artist's journals and sketchbooks to create a well-rounded account of his life and work. Shows how the violence and extravagant romantic gestures in his public paintings echoed his era. Offers excellent critiques of many paintings, demonstrating his attempts to perfect his technique and to free himself from influences of David and Géricault. Archival photographs and live-action footage of present-day Paris and countryside are effectively used to illustrate quotations from his journals.
