The
Secret of Marcel Duchamp - Currently
Unavailable
In 1913, Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968) shocked
the cultural establishment when he turned everyday objects into works
of art, simply by adding his signature to anything from a snow shovel
to a urinal. These witty "ready-mades" revolutionized the traditional
concepts and perceptions of art in the twentieth century. Even after 1923,
when Duchamp did not appear to be producing any new work, his reputation
continued to grow as his ideas were taken up by artists all over the world.
It was only after his death that his final creation was revealed: the
mysterious Étant Donnés (Given), an elaborate peepshow
of a nude molded in plaster and pigskin, which had occupied him for more
than twenty years. This program explores the life and work of the enigmatic
Duchamp and tells the story of his late love affair with Brazilian artist
(and diplomat's wife) Maria Martins, which affected him profoundly and
inspired the Étant Donnés. Martins' daughter, Duchamp's
daughter and stepson, and his friend and biographer Calvin Tomkins are
among those taking part in the film. Includes archival footage of interviews
with Duchamp, and scenes of locales in Paris and New York where he lived
and worked. The Works series. Curator's
