(Max Ernst: Mein Vagabundieren, Meine Unruhe) - Currently
Unavailable
Explores the work of German painter,
collagist, and author Max Ernst (1891-1976), using archival footage and
recordings of the artist. Shows Ernst in Germany where he founded the
Cologne Dada group. Follows him to Paris where he meets French artist
Jean Arp (1887-1966) and French poet Guillaume Apollinaire, starts to
work in collage, and invents frottage. Includes extracts from films,
including L'AGE D'OR by Luis Buñuel and Spanish painter and printmaker
Salvador Dalí, with Ernst acting in a bit part. Also shows Ernst
in the United States, where he starts a series of paintings based on his
experience of the Hopi Indians and of life in the Arizona desert. Curator's
Comments: Perhaps
the definitive profile of Ernst, by a director who was a friend of the
artist and produced short films with him. Based primarily on the artist's
own statements, accompanied by photographs and other historical material,
and minimally staged dramatic sequences. DATE: 1991
