Paul Gauguin: The Savage Dream

Profiles French painter, sculptor, and printmaker Paul Gauguin (1848-1903). Explores his obsessive search for a "savage" alternative to his own culture and concentrates on his final years in Tahiti and the Marquesas Islands, where the film was shot. Actor Donald Sutherland reads excerpts from Gauguin's writings, which reveal the artist's philosophy of life.

Curator's Comments: A psychological profile; creates a mood with lush tropical location scenes and the music of Wagner. Describes many paintings and also shows Gauguin's ceramic sculptures.
