Slaves of Fashion: J.A.D. Ingres - Currently Unavailable

Places the works of French painter Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres (1780-1867) in the context in which they were created: the struggle between the proponents of classicism and romanticism (e.g., Eugène Delacroix, Théodore Géricault) and the emergence of Symbolism and Impressionism. Considered by some to be the very incarnation of the academic style, Ingres was to influence painters such as Pierre Auguste Renoir and Edgar Degas, who bore witness to his genius and recognized him as a master. Combines dramatic re-creations of significant events in Ingres's life, as well as fictional passages, with views of his paintings and excerpts from classic films about the era in which he lived and worked.

Curator's Comments: Interesting mix of dramatic re-creations (models posing nude or re-creating Ingres's paintings), critical analysis of paintings, biographical and historical information, intercut with footage from old movies to lend atmosphere. Beautifully shot and lit--has nice lush texture, rich color. Good for general audiences.
