Monsieur René Magritte (DVD version ONLY)

Profiles Belgian Surrealist painter René Magritte (1898-1967) and shows the recurring influence of certain themes and places on his work. Visits the various towns in which he lived, which were a source of inspiration to him, and shows extracts from 8mm films made by the painter for the enjoyment of his friends. Includes footage from a television interview with Magritte, shot in his home.

Curator's Comments: Excellent marriage of form and content. Nicely paced with plenty of silent passages to offer respite from voice-over or interview sequences. Good script: gives biographical information but concentrates on the artist's work. Music track is good, works with images but doesn't overpower them.
