Meishu: Travels in Chinese Art - Currently Unavailable

China's vast size and diversity of landscape have been reflected in its art through the ages, and the natural barriers that isolate it from the rest of the world have allowed the Chinese to develop their own distinctive traditions. This three-part series combines art history and travelogue as host Edmund Capon explores China past and present. Capon, an art historian and director of the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, is the author of numerous books on Chinese art. Program 1: CANAL BOAT TO HISTORY delves into the problems of communication caused by China's vast size and diversity of landscape, and shows how this has been reflected in Chinese art through the ages. Capon explores three peaks of Chinese culture: the Bronze Age, the Han Dynasty, and the Tang Dynasty, and looks at their distinctive artistic achievements. Program 2: CHINA AND THE WORLD explores China's erratic and invariably difficult contacts with other cultures and ideologies, caused by both natural and cultural barriers, and how this isolation has allowed her to develop her own great and distinctive traditions in art. Program 3: THE CHINESE IDENTITY takes viewers to selected locations that embody the real and distinctive character of the country and the symbols that represent the unique spirit reflected in China's art: Beijing's Forbidden City, a classic Chinese garden, and the sacred mountain of Huangshan.

Curator's Comments: Familiar format (enthusiastic host travelling to exotic locales, explaining as he goes), but these programs do offer armchair travelers an interesting tour of China and provide insight into its history and culture.
