Isamu Noguchi - Currently UnavailableExplores the East-West sensibility of American sculptor and designer Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988). Uses photographs to depict his boyhood in Japan and his student years under sculptors Onorio Ruotolo in New York City and Constantin Brancusi in Paris. Noguchi is seen working, planning, talking with clients, workers, and friends. His simple, poetic choice of words provides insight into the organic, natural qualities of his work and his reverence for rocks and their relationship to nature. Shows the diversity of his works in many media and various locations, ranging from his 1935 relief History of Mexico in Mexico City to lanterns, fountains, playgrounds, and stage sets. Sites shown include Chase Manhattan Plaza in New York City, UNESCO headquarters in Paris, the Detroit Renaissance Plaza, Storm King Art Center in New York, and Tokyo's Sogetsu-Kaikan.Curator's Comments: This profile of the artist excels in several ways: it offers Noguchi on camera, making enlightening comments on his work and artistic development; it provides an opportunity to inspect a large sampling of his oeuvre; and in its telling of his life story, the program reveals the many influences that shaped this artist's distinctive style. Additional interest is provided by the wide variety of world-wide sites shown: places where his sculpture is displayed and places where he found inspiration. A monotonous musical score is the only flaw in this otherwise superb video that will fascinate art students, interest general audiences, and inform both types of audience.
