A three-part profile of Italian painter
Raphael (1483-1520). Part One, THE APPRENTICE YEARS, examines his life
and career up to the age of twenty-five. In particular, it looks at the
ways in which Raphael synthesized the lessons learned from such artists
as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo Buonarroti and how those lessons
manifested themselves in his famous Madonna and Child canvases. Filmed
in and around Perugia, Urbino, and Florence. Part Two, THE PRINCE OF PAINTERS,
discusses Raphael's work for the Vatican in Rome, his designs for the
Sistine Chapel (which brought him into conflict with Michelangelo), and
his appointment as architect of Saint Peter's. This segment questions
whether modern viewers can still respond to great art based on the Christian
story, classical humanism, and the love of the Greek ideal. Filmed in
Rome. Part Three, LEGEND AND LEGACY, outlines the issues of tradition,
continuity, and classical values by looking at the Raphael inheritance.
Caravaggio, Rubens, Rembrandt, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Pablo Picasso
are just some of the artists who have borrowed from Raphael. Indeed, it
has been suggested that the whole idea of "academic art" derives
from admiration for him. Filmed in museums and galleries in Rome, Paris,
Amsterdam, Denmark, and Great Britain. Raphael series. Curator's
Comments: A
comprehensive and scholarly survey of the artist's work and an appealing
portrait of the man and his times. Raphael is such a seminal artist that
most viewers will find something of interest here: an analysis of his
major works, his influences and his legacy, visits to locales he painted.
