      Docudrama about the life and work of 
        American photographer W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978), whose photos captured 
        the changing social conditions and the enduring American spirit both at 
        war and at peace, and served as a catalyst for social change. Actor Peter 
        Riegert portrays Smith in a dramatization based on excerpts from his letters 
        and diaries. Interviews friends and colleagues, including biographer Jim 
        Hughes; managing editor of Life magazine Edward K. Thompson; critic 
        John Berger; photo critic A.D. Coleman; and Cornell Capa of the International 
        Center of Photography, New York City. Shows over 600 of his images, including 
        the famous "Dewey Defeats Truman" photograph. American Masters
