Vermeer: Light, Love,
and Silence - Currently
Unavailable
Investigates the enigmatic life of Dutch
painter Jan Vermeer (1632-1675), who never sold a painting during his
lifetime, and examines the social and political meanings of his work.
Uses advanced technology to refute the longstanding belief that Vermeer
painted over projections from a camera obscura. Shows restoration in progress
on several of his canvases. Composer Carl Davis plays period music on
musical instruments that appear in Vermeer's paintings. Presents archival
footage from the 1950s on notorious Dutch art forger Han Van Meegeren
(1889-1947), whose specialty was fake Vermeers. Commentary by theater
director Jonathan Miller and art historians Svetlana Alpers and John Berger.
The South Bank Show series.
