Andy Warhol - Currently Unavailable

Traces the life and work of American artist Andy Warhol (1928-1987) from his youth in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to scenes of his memorial service at Saint Patrick's Cathedral, New York City. Shows the development of his work in art and film, and discusses his involvement in publishing Interview magazine. Using footage from interviews over twenty years, the film examines his passion for celebrity status. Friends and colleagues who share their reminiscences about Warhol include Ivan Karp, Emile de Antonio, Victor Bockris, Jamie Warhola (brother), Gerard Malanga, Brigid Berlin, Paul Morrissey, John Giorno, Billy Name, Ondine, Viva, Bob Colacello, Ronnie Cutrone, Vincent Fremont, Jean Michel Basquiat, Robert Rosenblum, and Ken Deland. Includes excerpts from Warhol's films SLEEP, MARIO BANANA, COUCH, KITCHEN, CHELSEA GIRLS, LONESOME COWBOYS, TRASH, and WOMEN IN REVOLT. Hosted by Melvyn Bragg. The South Bank Show series.

Curator's Comments: Warhol's fifteen-minutes of fame have extended well beyond the allotted time. He is still considered a major American artist. This program offers a useful introduction to the artist and his work.
